Essilor Mission 2019
On March 27th-29th, As part of the Essilor mission, team of 8 ODs and 16 support staff traveled to the islands of Anguilla and St. Maarten to perform vision screenings. The mission was also supported by generous equipment donations from several companies.
The essilor mission teams screened more than 1,000 patients over the 3 days across the 2 islands. The majority of patients screened are students at local schools, in addition to residents at a local nursing home. Approximately 60% of patients screened were dispensed glasses.
Each patient seen on the mission trip had tonometry and autorefraction performed and then examined by a doctor of optometry. The eye exam included refraction, a gross observation of the anterior segment of the eyes, and a retinal examination with a direct ophthalmoscope. Patients who needed further evaluation were worked-up for such and referrals were made where necessary.
Glasses Dispensed:
Anguilla: 248 total patients seen, 146 glasses needed = 59%
St Maarten: 758 total patients seen, 454 glasses needed = 60%
Thank you to Essilor and all the ODs for allowing Vision Equipment Inc to participate in this very important endeavor.
